The 18th Annual French Film Festival returns to the Byrd Theatre March 25-28, 2010 with films, events and a delegation of French directors and actors. As the largest French Film Festival in the United States, this weekend long event attracts Francophiles from across the eastern United States and as far away as Europe.

This year the festival features 12 feature length films and 12 short films. For many of the films, this is their world premier. Directors and actors will be available after the viewings to answer audience questions.

Additional events include master classes with the directors, an official reception, and a closing ceremony with the entire French delegation.

Tickets are $12 per film and can be purchased before the showing of each film. Passes and tickets to the reception are available for purchase on the French Film Festival website. Student discounted passes are available.

This is the first in a series on the French Film Festival and French culture in Richmond.

OMG Boulevardizen May Have Been Wrong: Tales of Ben & Jerry's Demise Premature

Sources tell us that Ben & Jerry's of Carytown may in fact NOT be out of business as earlier speculated on Boulevardizen. Close observation of the franchise reveals a sign inside declaring "FREEZER UNDER REPAIR." A freezer failure in the ice cream business is clearly a catastrophic malfunction. The only greater catastrophe in this freezer debacle is the loss of gallons and gallons of delicious frozen treats!

Our original story cited Twitter posts reporting the unexplained closure of the desert shop and conjecture from local fans of competing Bev's Ice Cream.

The Treat Business Is Sweet In Carytown

The Richmond Times-Dispatch profiles Carytown's sweetest new enterprise: America's Sweet Shop. Alisha Thompson, owner of the new venture previously operated the Cookies By Design shop in the same location:

The cookie shop she'd been running for five years was changing, and she knew it would be tough -- if not impossible -- to keep going. Thompson could continue down the path and renew her expiring franchise agreement with Cookies by Design or reopen as a whole new business. It was a difficult proposition...

.... She could have gotten a decent job with benefits and the time to pay off her debts. Considering she was three months pregnant at the time, no one would have blamed her for taking that road.

But Thompson decided on the most difficult path.

Big Changes Coming To Carytown

Richmond BizSense reports that the City of Richmond and the Carytown Merchants Association are working together to enhance the West Cary Street shopping destination. BizSense says the most notable improvements will include:

...construction of brick crosswalks, extending curbings at selected corners along Cary , adding colored, rubberized matting at curbing cutouts to aid visually impaired pedestrians, and erecting a new marble and metal entranceway sign for Carytown that will stand 20-feet high.

The brick crosswalks are intended to enhance the aesthetics of the area, he said. Brick crosswalks have been done in other areas of the city, such as along North Boulevard , just north of Broad Street .

The crosswalks, curb extensions and cutouts will initially be done at Carytown’s three busiest intersections – Dooley, Belmont and Sheppard streets, Broomfield said.

Winter 2010: The Worst Ever For Carytown?

Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop may be the icing on the cake for Carytown's growing list of vacant storefronts. Desert seekers reported last night on Twitter that the world famous ice cream store was closed during prime business hours in the Cary Street entertainment corridor.

Says RVAFoodie: Noticed @BenJerrysVA in Carytown was closed during business hours tonight & all ice cream was gone. Victory is Bev's!!! #RVA

An inspection of the establishment Saturday afternoon revealed all interior tables had vanished and no frozen dairy products could be seen within the shuttered establishment. No signs or indications of the status of the franchise were posted to inform treat seekers of Ben & Jerry's future.

Ben & Jerry's eastern Carytown location will potentially join the list of several other establishments that were savaged by the vicious economic winter of 2010: Raylene's Pennyrich, Bang On & the Verizon Wireless outlet.

Will the recent spate of closings and vacant properties lower rental costs of properties along West Cary Street? Do the spring and summer seasons of 2010 offer innovative entrepreneurs an opportunity to advance new ventures along West Cary Street? These and many more questions are on the minds of area residents and the remaining merchants of Carytown.

River City Cellars' Wine Bar Showing Progress As Construction Continues

What does it take to convert an old Carytown storefront into a wine bar? A lot of hard work according to the fascinating chronicles of urban renovation at the River City Cellars blog. The enterprising owners of the popular gourmet wine, beer and cheese shop in Carytown recently posted an update on the construction progress at their expanded location:

So, I didn't tell Tom how much I fear ladders. It's not a fear of heights. I'm just fine going up, but the awkward, precarious, equipment-laden decent not so much. The good news was the weather FOR ONCE cooperated. So up we went. The hood guys had strategically placed the exhaust equipment a few days before so we ... cut through 90 years' worth of really nasty, smelly, confusing roofing materials to start the venting shaft.

...Today Jim Jones (hood guy) and his trusty partner will bore through the upstairs office (hi, neighbor!), insert the 2 story welded monstrosity, wrap it and build a chase around it. Then it's fire suppression time...

Follow more of the progress of the River City Cellars expansion at their store's blog.
